“It’s not that the word has disappeared, exactly, but it has shed one of its meanings. While one usage always denoted craftiness, the other meaning was benign, even infantile. Something cunning was dear, precious, made with craft and care.”
I love this usage of the word cunning. I use it to describe the one-sheet zine construction method I teach people at workshops, where you take a page of paper and fold and cut it in such a way that it becomes an 8-page booklet. It is a cunning design because it is simple but clever and makes a tiny perfect book for next to no money. Excellent word, excellent result!
